Joe Biden used his speech at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner to mock Donald Trump. AdvertisementOften referred to as Washington's "nerd prom," hundreds of journalists, politicians, and celebrities rubbed shoulders on Saturday evening at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. President Joe Biden jokes about his age and Donald Trump at the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump responded to Biden's Saturday comments on his Truth Social platform, saying, "The White House Correspondents' Dinner was really bad. Later in his White House Correspondents' speech, Biden also delivered some light-hearted jokes at the media's expense.

NYC restaurateur Keith McNally insulted Lauren Sánchez in an apparently unprompted Instagram post. And his latest target is Lauren Sánchez, the fiancée of one of the most powerful people in the world, Jeff Bezos. McNally, who owns more than a dozen restaurants including NYC's famed Balthazar, wrote a seemingly out-of-the-blue Instagram post attacking Sánchez and Bezos on Monday. Chrissy Teigen commented on McNally's post, writing, "She's actually incredibly dynamic, accomplished and kind, and everyone who knows her would say the same." If his edited-down post is any indication, McNally sure learned the hard way not to mess with Sánchez, or her famous friends.

Twelve Manhattanites have been chosen to serve on the jury for the first criminal trial of a U.S. president. The judge ordered that the jurors’ identities be kept confidential during the trial and that reporters withhold some information that could identify them. He said he had heard about some of former President Donald J. Trump’s other criminal cases, but he did not have an opinion about him. He said he follows Mr. Trump’s former fixer, Michael D. Cohen, who is expected to be a key witness, on social media. He said he believed Mr. Trump had done some good for the country, adding “it goes both ways.”

New York CNN —Did Donald Trump fall asleep in court? As the first criminal trial of a former American president commenced Monday, The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman delivered a stunning report from the Manhattan courtroom. “This is 100% Fake News coming from ‘journalists’ who weren’t even in the court room,” a Trump campaign spokesperson later insisted. The Trump campaign forcefully denying Haberman and other reporters’ accounts quickly created two versions of events for people at home to choose to believe: Trump or Haberman. One of the concerns has been that by welcoming the public into the courtroom, cases will transform into public spectacles, similar to the O.J.

Getting Dressed for the ‘Muslim Met Gala’

Washington Square Park is known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic characters. People celebrate Eid by getting dressed to the nines, which is why some jokingly refer to it as the Muslim Met Gala. Many came to Washington Square Park wearing colorful traditional garments like galabeyas, grand boubous, salwar kameez, thobes, kurtas and abayas, some of which were accessorized with opulent jewels or swipes of dark kajal eyeliner. Others chose more casual clothes — like the comic Ramy Youssef, who wore a hoodie and a green baseball cap. On the morning of Eid, there are many large prayer gatherings throughout New York — in mosques, at high school football fields, on blocked-off streets.

Opinion | Netanyahu Must Go

Israel must destroy Hamas as a military and political force in the territory while minimizing harm to civilians. And for all of that to happen effectively, Benjamin Netanyahu must go. Why — to paraphrase Scarborough and his co-hosts — was Netanyahu asking Qatar to fund Hamas to the tune of hundreds of millions just weeks before the massacre? Why was the bulk of the Israeli military nowhere near Gaza in the first hours of the attack? When an Israeli minister is forced to humiliate himself on American TV because he can muster neither the sophistry nor the servility that a smoother answer would require, it’s a sign he’s in the wrong government.

March 19, 2024To the confusion and frustration of some within his campaign, Trump more recently had flirted with supporting a federal abortion ban at 15 weeks. “We’ll be making a statement next week on abortion,” Trump teased instead.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In a video promoting the Bible, Trump said, “Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country. … we need to bring them back.”On Good Friday, Trump posted a very different kind of video. It showed an image of President Joe Biden lying sideways and tied up in the bed of a pickup truck. “Robert F. Cesar Conde is not the typical leader of a major news institution. A Wharton-trained executive who revived the fortunes of Telemundo and sits on the boards of Pepsi and Walmart, Mr. Conde had limited experience in journalism when, in 2020, he became the chairman of NBC’s sprawling news division, including MSNBC, CNBC, and franchises like “Meet the Press,” “Nightly News” and the “Today” show. Now he is trying to navigate the biggest crisis of his tenure: a journalistic firestorm that prompted an open revolt among his stars and has fueled internal questions about just how neatly Mr. Conde’s corporate experience and ambitions gel with the unique challenges of the news business. The blowback facing Mr. Conde, 50, a former fellow in George W. Bush’s White House who prides himself on having an even-keeled, nonpartisan reputation, is coming from both sides of the aisle. Left-leaning fans of MSNBC felt betrayed, and Republican officials are mocking NBC as biased, even threatening to bar its reporters from this summer’s nominating convention.

Yet the idea of building rosters of paid political contributors took off with cable news. MSNBC, CNN and Fox News Channel are, in large part, political talk channels and seek experts to help fill the time. Being on call to opine can be lucrative work; several reports had NBC agreeing to pay McDaniel $300,000 a year. Even NBC News, whose MSNBC cable outlet appeals to liberals, has more than a dozen Republican contributors. It’s difficult to succinctly summarize the disastrous state of affairs at the news division, given that multiple engines are failing simultaneously. sand and refusing to dump McDaniel until after his top television personalities, including Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow, went on the air and excoriated the hire. Ironically, NBC News’ attempt to make inroads with Republicans through the hiring of McDaniel has had the opposite effect. The expert said pipelines near the bridge could make removing the bridge debris more challenging. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services. Trying to juice ratings in an election year, a major TV network hired a pair of provocative commentators from the political establishment to inject some spiky opinion into its otherwise-staid campaign coverage. These days, the role of the “paid contributor” — a commentator on contract, to bloviate on demand — is fully baked into the TV news ecosystem. Or, in the case of Ronna McDaniel, as the former chairwoman of the Republican Party. Ms. McDaniel’s tenure as a paid contributor at NBC News was less successful than those of many of her peers. For the past week the best drama on NBC — apologies to Dick Wolf — has been in the news department. On Friday, NBC News announced that it was hiring Ronna McDaniel, the former chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, as a political analyst. By Sunday morning, Kristen Welker was grilling Ms. McDaniel on “Meet the Press,” after which the former host Chuck Todd told his successor on-air that their bosses “owe you an apology.” By Monday morning, the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” condemned the hire. This kind of full-on, on-air revolt was something else — because Ms. McDaniel’s hiring was something else. The fiasco at NBC was in part a sign of how media outlets are struggling to cover politics in unusual times.

New York CNN —Only 80 hours elapsed between NBC News announcing Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor and the network ousting her from that very role. But for the leadership at NBC Universal News Group, those were 80 painful hours. “What a sh*t show!” a media executive exclaimed to me Tuesday shortly after Conde relieved McDaniel of her NBC News credentials. “These Radical Left Lunatics are CRAZY and the top people at NBC ARE WEAK,” Trump raged on his Truth Social platform.
